Publish & Communicate

Learn how the library can help you to publish & communicate your results

The library offers support in the areas of publishing and communicating scientific results. Researchers can learn about Open Access, Research Data Policy, Research Data Management, ISTA Research Explorer, Technical Reports, Author Identifier, Data Visualization and Science 2.0 Tools.

On this site:

Open Access

Open Access – unrestricted access to scientific publications – is an ongoing trend in the scientific community. Open Access makes scientific publications and other digital material, such as research data, freely accessible via the world-wide-web. ISTA is committed to provide unrestricted and free online access to scientific publications for all users and researchers as widely as possible. The main goal is to increase the visibility, use, and impact of research output, and thereby generate added value for the scientific community.

Research Data Policy

The President has approved the Research Data Policy. The main goals of the policy are:

  • Avoid data loss
  • Define clear responsibilities
  • Provide guidance to the researchers on how to publish data
  • Ensure that a copy of data generated at the Institute should stay at the Institute; this copy should be long-term archived
  • Provide help to stay compliant with legal, ethical, and research funder requirements and also aim for high standards in general.

Overall, the policy should create a balance between the interests of the researchers and the interest of the Institute.

Research Data Management

The relevance of managing and sharing research data has been growing over the years. Several research funders (e.g. EC, FWF) require research data management plans and research data to be as freely available as possible at the end of a project. Besides these requirements, there are many benefits in thinking about data management in advance.

  • Make your research easier
  • Do not drown in irrelevant stuff
  • Save data for later
  • Ensure research integrity
  • Write a data paper
  • Share your data for re-use and/or possible large scale collaborative research
  • Increase the impact of research results and get credit for it
  • Save research funds and resources by avoiding needless duplication of work
  • Enhance data security and minimize the risk of data loss

ISTA Research Explorer

ISTA Research Explorer (ISTA REx) is the institutional repository presenting the scholarly output of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA). Researchers are encouraged to deposit their scholarly publications with a Creative Commons license, preprints, postprints, technical reports, and theses in full text. In addition, other research results such as research data, software or conference papers can be made available. Originally published material for instance theses or research data receive their own DOI as a persistent identifier. The Open Access Policy of ISTA underpins the repository and supports the mission to make research at ISTA as open as possible to the public.

ISTA REx enables the creation of bibliographic lists for single authors affiliated to ISTA, a specific Research Group or the whole Institute. After logging in with the institutional account, a user may add items via DOI import, pdf upload or by entering PMID or arXiv IDs and publish their scholarly papers Open Access under the conditions of the publisher. The repository includes helpful features like linking articles to research data or other articles, and linking all entries of the same awarded or acknowledged grants. ISTA REx therefore facilitates the responsibility of the researchers to satisfy grant and funder requirements for Open Access within the research cycle such as the ERC, Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe or FWF. Technically, ISTA REx is realized with the Open Source software LibreCat. The metadata records (except the copyright protected abstracts) are available under a CC0 license in several formats through an API interface. The service is listed in OpenDOAR and re3data.

Technical Reports

We provide a chronological list of technical reports created at ISTA since 2009. These reports are published via ISTA Research Explorer, the institutional repository of ISTA.

Author Identifiers (ID)

An Author ID is a persistent and unique digital identifier that allows researchers to distinguish themselves from other researchers and to unambiguously link themselves to their research activity.

Data Visualization

“Data Visualization” means the graphical illustration of information and data using elements like graphs, charts or maps. It makes connections and relations between certain sets of data visible and, thus, more comprehensible.
Visualization makes research efforts intellectually accessible to the reader and also distinguishes the work from other research projects in the field.

The library has compiled some information and examples for visualization.

Science 2.0 Tools

Social science networks are something very useful. They can help you organize your research, papers, projects and much more. Using these platforms, you can easily coordinate your PDF’s and almost all of them can get the most important metadata to e.g. create citations quicker and easier. That’s not the only thing they can do though, they’re also great for finding people whose research interests you and people interested in yours. With these social features added it makes it much easier finding collaborators. Also, some of these networks even have forums where you can ask and answer each other’s questions and thus helping everybody get one step closer to their publication. With these two things combined, organization and community, projects are much more productive and efficient.
